Today I’m going to do something a little different. Last week, I was supposed to give a workshop about marketing your business online. However, when I asked the audience, most of the people there didn’t own a business and weren’t interested in starting one. But they were curious how one could apply marketing principles to their career and job search. So, on the fly, I modified my content to suit the needs of my audience. Here is a segment of the presentation that covers the five steps of marketing … and how they can be applied to one’s career.
The five steps of marketing are:
- Know your target market
- Know your sweet spot with your target market
- Build a relationship with your target market
- Make offers
- Collect money in exchange for products/services
As I mention in the video above, here’s how you translate those steps to a job search:
- Know your target market
What kinds of company do you want to work for? For profit? Non profit? What industry? - Know your sweet spot with your target market
Where do your skills, talents and experience intersect with what your target market needs and looks for in an employee? - Build a relationship with your target market
This includes you cover letter, but it can go beyond that. Have you built depth or breadth in your industry? Can you network with others in your industry (aka professional organizations)? - Make offers
Send out your applications. - Collect money in exchange for products/services
Land the job and negotiate a fair salary/compensation package … then do your job well.
