A brilliant debater and England’s first and only Jewish Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, once said, “Nurture your mind with great thoughts; to believe in the heroic makes heroes.” We all need heroes. Evoking them is empowering, a vital part of our emotional and spiritual growth. Without the examples of the […]
- Calling forth and acting upon an abstract concept?
- Or calling forth and acting like a concrete role model?
I would say the latter.
We all do this at different times of our life. We find ourselves in a situation and ask ourselves, “What would my hero/heroine do in this situation?”
This evocation of a hero is a natural way of using those we admire to help us step up in our lives.
Being a social species, we are intrinsically interested in other people, and learn better by example than by theoretical concept, says Frank Farley, PhD, a Temple University psychologist who has dedicated his career to the study of heroism. “Heroes help us learn great ideas because they are embodied in a person.”

We live in a world where the pressure to fit in and be like every one else is very strong. However, not only is that the worst thing you could do you for your life, it can be the death of your business.
Businesses that are successful are those that set themselves apart from the pack. Think Apple. They don’t approach computing the way all the other computer companies do, and they’ve built an avid (dare I say rabid?) following.
When you own your awesome, you are your essential self regardless of what the world around you encourages you to be.
Yes, this means you often have to take out the virtual machete and carve out your own path. But, it is your path, the path you were meant to walk, and therefore the jungle vines in your way will melt like butter before your machete.
What’s interesting is what follows … (more…)

“Speakers are always talking about how you want to be authentic. You want to be authentic. But very few people ever really explain what that actually means. … I think when you improvise — since you are actor, director and writer all in one — you really have to be […]
