Weekday Wisdom, Episode 99
Today I talk about a quote from Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States.
“You are not here merely to make a living.
You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply,
with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement.
You are here to enrich the world,
and you impoverish yourself if you forget that errand.”
~ Thomas Woodrow Wilson
Do you believe that’s true? I definitely do.
I think that, at least as an entrepreneur, my job is to make the world a better place using the gifts that I’ve been given. That’s why it’s so important to find a business that you’re passionate about, something you can really get behind because it makes it easier to keep moving forward and doing your best when you love what you do. When you don’t love what you do, sometimes you procrastinate or you don’t do as good a job.
For example, there was a time in my life when I was desperate to make money. I had lost my job and I was the sole provider for our home. So, I took every opportunity that came to me. I tried being a Mary Kay consultant. I tried being a Primerica representative. I tried all sorts of things. And none of these were things that I was passionate about. In fact, for example, Mary Kay — wonderful product. I have nothing against a product — but one of the things that they drilled into their saleswomen is, “You aren’t professional if you don’t wear a dress.”
Well, I hate wearing dresses (at least most of the time). And I’m not a makeup person. I basically wear lipstick. And I only do that because I found this long-lasting lipstick, that I put it on once in the morning and it’s pretty much there for the rest of the day. I’m just I’m just not a makeup person. So, me selling makeup to people? Didn’t make much sense. And don’t even get me started on that life insurance business! I mean, why was I trying that? Because I was desperate for cash.
Now I’m building a business around something I’m really passionate about. I’ve got my book, Public Speaking Super Powers, coming out. It should be available for presale by August 1st. And it will be released to the public in September. I haven’t decided whether I’m going to stagger the release of the ebook, hardcover, and paperback editions; or just release them all the same time. I haven’t decided how I’m going to release them yet. But you will be able to buy the book within the next two months in some format.
And it’s all around public speaking and I love public speaking. And I love helping other people do better in public speaking.
So, with that business, I am making the world a better place. I am enriching the world by helping people become better communicators. And as a part of that business, I’m also going to help people create information products, like books and online courses, because guess what else I’d love to do? I’ve been a writer all my life. I love creating content. And helping other people be in love with content is something that really makes my heart shine.
What I am saying here is, think about what it means to make the world a better place. It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to join the Peace Corps or give to charity — although those are wonderful things. But you’ve been given a unique set of skills, gifts, and passions. That is your gift to the world.

And always remember: Think outside the box. I talked about that today. You know, enriching the world doesn’t mean a specific thing. It means living out who you are because you were made to make the world a better place.
Spread your wings and fly. Because only when you fly, are you able to live out that passion, that gift, that you are meant to be for the world.
Always remember: You are capable of more than you know. Just start pushing your envelope, stepping outside your comfort zone just a little bit. A little bit every day or every week. And you will get to where you want to go. In fact, you’ll probably end up where you had no idea you were meant to be.
This is Carma Spence, and I hope you enjoy today’s Weekday Wisdom. I’ll see you next week.
