Who would you rather listen to?
Dora has no interest in her presentation’s topic. She gives her speech by rote in an almost monosyllabic monotone. It is clear she knows her topic, but just doesn’t care about it.
Pamela loves her topic. She gets animated when she talks about it. Her enthusiasm is infectious and she speaks with vocal variety, knowledge and passion.
I’m going to step out on a limb here and guess that you’d rather listen to Pamela.
Because a person who speaks with passion is:
- More entertaining
- More engaging
- More interesting
than someone who doesn’t.
That’s the power of passion in public speaking.
So when selecting your topics, be sure they are ones that you have an interest in. Of course, if your business is based on your passion, this should be easy!
How do you show passion in your speaking?
Passionate speakers are animated. They gesture more. Their voice changes pitch and volume. They may even have a tendency to lean forward when making a point.
Passionate speakers have personality. When watching and listening to a passionate person speak, you get a sense of who they are and what they are about. They have a clear voice and style. No two speakers are alike and it is the personality that sets them apart.
Passionate speakers have purpose. You can tell by the way they speak and the words they choose that they are on a mission. Their presentation has a clear call to action that the speaker believes in.
It is sometimes said that it is what you do with what you have that counts. When you have passion for your topic, you don’t need to be the world’s best speaker to engage your audience. Your enthusiasm will be infectious and your point will be made.
