Yesterday, Sunday, my husband and I went to go see the new Black Panther movie, the latest Marvel action, superhero movie. And it worked on so many levels. I’m going to be writing about it on The Genre Traveler because it really moved me. But, what I’d like to focus on today is how lessons learned in that film can help you make right decisions.

Life often presents you with opportunities to make decisions that have no objective right or wrong answer. You have to make a decision that’s right for you. And here are three ways that I learned while watching Black Panther that will help you make a decision that is right for you.

1. Surround yourself with trusted advisers.

The young king had a number of people around him to provide feedback and advice. He had his mother. He had his sister. He had his ex-girlfriend. He had the general. He had that shaman guy. He had all these people around him. They didn’t all necessarily agree with him, or with each other, but they were all people whose advice he could take in and he could trust they were giving him their truth. Then he would weigh what they shared and come up with what he thought was the best answer for him.

2. Find out, as much as you can, what the truth is.

***WARNING: Possible Spoiler Alert (this paragraph only) ***
The young king was faced with this really tough situation when he discovered that his father had killed his uncle and left his cousin to fend for himself in the U.S. And that whole situation ended up coming back to bite him in the butt. But, if he hadn’t been forearmed with the information — because all that had been kept a secret — he would not have been able to make a choice that was right for him.

So, do what you can to uncover truths around this decision that you may not know right away. They may not be obvious or apparent, they may be hidden. Do a little digging.

3. Go within.

You need to make decisions that are in alignment with who you are at your core, with your core values. This decision may go against what your trusted advisers say. It may go against tradition. But you need to make a decision that you can live with, that you are comfortable with. So, do some soul searching to find out: What are your core values? And how do they impact how you make this decision?

So, that’s how Black Panther can teach you how to make right decisions.

  • Trusted advisors
  • Uncover hidden truths
  • Make decisions in alignment with your core values
  • Remember:
    Don’t box yourself.
    Spread your wings and fly.
Because you — yes you — are capable of more than you know.
